I’m a total sucker for anything Thai. I’ll make my way to Bangkok every other month, and eat my way across the city one morsel at a time. It’s absolutely addictive, and an experience of Epicurean proportions.
I must say I was truly elated when a decent Thai restaurant surfaced in Damansara Kim, Petaling Jaya around early 2013. Initially, I was a tad skeptical by the Thai “fusion” bit. But with the restaurant helmed by Kom, a Thai chef who hails from the Northern city of Chiang Rai and the ex-chef of My Elephant, I’m sure I’ll be in for a treat.
Pardon me for the crap photos, and shall lug around my hefty dSLR camera next time around. May not necessarily be a feast for the eyes, but hopefully the prose will suffice.
There were only two of us, and we endeavored to consume the signature dish, which is a ginormously sized plate of smoked duck with pomelo salad. It was rich in flavour as well as in texture with various seeds and nuts, augmented with a special and rather creamy dressing. The lime I thought was necessary in adding some brightness and balance to the dish. One can truly see the influence of the Thai flavours, but with some not-so-traditional ingredients such as pumpkin seeds. In the end, the combination worked out and resulted in a very flavourful dish.
I can’t say no to pork, thus opted for the Hang Laey curry with pork. Apparently the dish had been made with cooking cream instead of the traditional coconut curry, but it was tasty and with a nice zing of spiciness to it. The cashew nuts were also nice addition and gave a nice crunch to the dish.
We only had two dishes, but it gave us a glimpse of deliciousness, which I’ll be quite happy to return to with a larger band of brothers (and sisters) in order to truly savor the various dishes on offer.
Food is always better with good company, but good food and company in tandem is definitely something else.
