Paris is arguably one of, if not The, gastronomic capital of the world. Some folks contest that other cuisines such as Thai, Vietnamese, and Japanese cuisine that are far superior and less pretentious, but lest forget that the kitchen structures and hierachies that we’re familiar with today originated from the French. Case and point, the word “chef” is actually chief in French, whom is the conductor in orchestrating course after course of perfectly cooked, well timed, and consistent masterpieces. Well, in theory at least.
I love Paris. Once you get past the smell of pee permeating across the various train stations such as Gare de Lyon, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities that I had ever visited. The pulse of the city is palpable, and evolving with the influx of immigrants who bring much color to the city, as well as unfortunate, but unavoidable tensions with the original Parisiens. Tourists are also rampant of course, and with cunning pickpockets never too far away. So do keep your wits about you, and travel light if possible to minimize any distractions.
The culinary scene still stands tall with the paragons of the French culinary arts, such as Pierre Gagnaire, Joel Robuchon, Guy Savoy, and many more. But there’s also a new wave of chefs who shun the Michelin system, opting for more unpretentious restaurants that serve simple, but well executed meals. And of course, all the wonderful bistros, patisseries, and classic resturants as well are wonderful options. In any case, I can assure that you’ll definitely have a good meal in this city.

Here are some of my favourites, thus far:
- L’Astrance – One of the most memorable meals that I’ve ever had. Helmed by the genius of a chef, Pascal Barbot, who respects the ingredients and churn out what looks to be simple, but actually complex and amazing creations. Even a seemingly straight forward dish such as miso glazed cod with peas was a complete revelation to me.
- L’ Relais de L’Entrecote – They serve classic Steak frites, and, well that’s it really. Quite a typically cramp brasserie, but serves one of the best steak frites in Paris. Simple pleasures indeed.
- Spring – An American chef in Paris? Say it ain’t so! But Daniel Rose will surprise you, serving well thought out and delicious dishes, and in a very relaxed restaurant not far from the Louvre.
- Frenchie – Hidden in one of the many alleyways, lies a charming restaurant which serves simple but brilliant dishes. The chef, Gregory Marchand, can always be found toiling away at the restaurant, which is quite a rarity nowadays for chefs which that much acclaim.
- Sola – A French-Japanese restaurant that serves immaculate masterpieces that cohesively combines the best of both worlds. As much as I’m skeptical of fusion restaurants, Sola cracked the code and nailed it.
